2007 Coalfield Progress Hoops publication

Had a chance today to skim through the 2007 Hoops insert in the Coalfield Progress. Good job by the Coalfield sports staff.

Included are the coach's predictions for the districts. In the LPD, it is:

1. JI Burton
2. Powell Valley
3. JJ Kelly
4. Clintwood
5. Pound
6. Appalachia

Can Burton really win the LPD this year in bball?

I would think they would be the favorite..

Who do they have? They weren't that impressive last year.

I would think so as well, but not having Coleman is going to be a big loss for them.

Last year, JIB upset Gate City late in the season and went on to the quarter or semi-finals in the Region D tournament, I would think they have a good chance of going back to the tournament again this year.

I'm going to go out on a limb and put a different spin on it. That isn't a bad prediction... but I'm going to give my own prediction....

Boys
1. J.J. Kelly -
McAmis runs a disciplined, high energy game. If Kelly can sustain the energy for four quarters in each game, they should have the personnel to make a regional tourney appearance.
2. J.I. Burton - Early exit from football will have Burton's hoop legs under them earlier than last year.
3. Powell Valley - Always has the best athletes in the district, but it doesnt matter who the coach is (and they have a good one out there too right now)...but if the players dont care if they win or lose, there is no purpose to play.
3. Clintwood - This is a new feeling for the Green Wave these days... waiting for football to be over to get some of their players. The only question is... will the players be satisfied with the success of football, or will they see if they can go over and carry the feelings of success to the basketball court as well?
5. Pound - Never count out underdogs... I mean cats... from one day to the next.
6. Appalachia - Now these are underdogs!

Girls
1. J.I. Burton - This is the best kept secret in the LPD that no one knows about. People always talk about the boys and their athleticism.... well... its time for the boys program to make room... because when it comes to athleticism on the girls side... this is a no brainer. Coach Goforth has built the beginnings of some David and Goliath stories for this year.. and you heard it here. Be ready to watch these Lady Raiders throw some stones and knock off some giants this year. They are fun to watch and ready to change the culture.

2. Clintwood - After years of being the bridesmaid to Kelly and GC, watch for the Green Wave to make some real tidal surges along the LPD shores this year. It could be interesting to see how this Lady Wave version finishes out the year.

3. Kelly - This may be a surprising pick, but the Lady Indians do not pack the same punch as some of the versions of the last few years. Kelly has one major force for them... and if that force can survive a lot of box and ones, gimmick defenses, full court heavy pressure defense, etc... then.. she may be able to carry the Kelly to the promised land. Otherwise, it may a rather different year for Kelly than what they are used to. The Indians played a very less than average Blue Devil team who as it was plain to see are really working hard just to get to know each other on the floor. The Lady Devils lost loads of valuable experience but the former PV coach worked the Devils until the final horn the other night and in time they will be ok. The Lady Indians could've blown out the Devils but just were not able to... and that gives me cause for concern. There is no killer instint on this Kelly team... with the exception of one player. When it comes to killer instincts for this year, just call Clintwood - Jason from Halloween and Norton... Freddy Krueger.

4. Powell Valley - Just like the boys squads, has athletes coming out of the ears... but the heart and soul that makes champions is just not evident in the players. We'll see how this years version does a new coach.

5. Pound - Just looking to see who they can knock off again this year.

6. Appalachia - Just like Pound.

My predictions are pretty close to the coaches, except I think one of the mid-ranked teams will finish lower than expected.

You guys are kinda talking like it's a difficult thing to make the regional tourney but it won't be this year with the divisions.. Most teams will go to regionals with only 3 Div 2 teams and 4 Div 1 teams missing out.. So it would almost be harder to miss the tourney than to make it this year.. Burton will make it for sure.

Maybe this can be the year the TW boys finally make it back to the region tourney. Apparently Dude is eligible to play cause he was playing last night in the season opener.

Agreed. It's going to be easier this year.

But, in the past the LPD's second team often hasn't faired so well in the Region tournament. I'm not sure of how many teams will be going to the tournament from each district. It's still a bit confusing to me.

Personally, I think if so many teams go to the Region tournament then it kind of defeats the purpose of even having the district tournaments.
